Many homes and almost all farms use borehole or tank water rather than municipal supply, or a mix of both. These two factors shape the washing machine repairs we do here.

Hard water and borehole water

Borehole water in many parts of the Eastern Cape contains dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. When that water is heated in a washing machine, some of the minerals come out as scale, a hard white or grey crust.

What scale does

• Coats the heating element. The element has to work harder to heat the water, takes longer and eventually burns out.
• Clogs the temperature sensor, so the machine misreads the water temperature.
• Builds up in the drum and tub, trapping detergent and dirt.
• Affects inlet valves, causing them to stick open or closed.
• Makes detergent less effective, so clothes feel stiff and need more detergent.

What to do

• Run a descaling or machine cleaning wash every two to three months, using a product made for washing machines.
• Use a detergent formulated for hard water, or add a water softener product.
• Consider a water softener or filter on the household supply if your water is very hard.

Sediment in the water

Borehole and tank water often carries sand and fine sediment, especially after rain or when tank levels are low. Washing machines have a small mesh filter where the inlet hose connects. Sediment collects on this filter and slowly blocks it. The machine then fills slowly or stops with a water supply error.

What to do: Turn off the tap, unscrew the inlet hose at the back of the machine and gently clean the mesh filter with a soft brush. If your supply carries a lot of sediment, a sediment filter on the line before the machine protects it.

Work clothes and grit

Overalls, boots socks and work clothes from farms, workshops and building sites carry mud, grit, seeds and sometimes small stones, nails or wire. These end up in the pump filter and can jam or break the drain pump.

What to do: Shake out and brush off work clothes before washing, check pockets, and clean the pump filter regularly. For very dirty loads, a pre-rinse helps.

Heavy loads and bearings

Large families and farm households often wash big, heavy loads. Overloading puts huge strain on the drum bearings and shock absorbers during the spin. The first sign is usually a growing rumble or roar during spinning. Left too long, worn bearings can damage the drum shaft and outer tub, making the repair much more expensive.

What to do: Stick to the machine's load limit and wash bulky items like blankets and duvets separately. If you regularly wash large loads, a bigger-capacity machine is a good investment.

Top loaders on farms

Top loaders remain popular on farms and in larger households because they handle big loads and are simple to use. We repair belts, lid switches, agitators, motors, transmissions and pumps on top loaders as well as front loaders.

Power supply on farms

Farms often have long cable runs, older wiring and power fluctuations, and many now rely on solar and inverter systems. Voltage dips and surges can damage control boards and motors. A surge protector and a stable supply help protect the machine.
