Holiday homes may stand empty for months. Aircons, fridges, dishwashers and coffee machines that sit unused develop problems that only show up when the house fills again.

Pre-season checks

For holiday homes and rentals, we recommend booking a pre-season check in October or November. Quick tips for J-Bay homes

• Shake out sand from towels and beach clothes before washing, and clean the washing machine pump filter often in summer.
• Never machine-wash wetsuits. Rinse them by hand in fresh water.
• Rinse aircon outdoor units gently with fresh water every month or two near the beach.
• Vacuum fridge coils twice a year, more often for garage and braai-area fridges.
• Wipe the hob before cooking so sand does not scratch ceramic glass.
• Use surge protection for fridges, aircons and electronics.
