Perished and burst hoses

Rubber inlet and drain hoses age faster in salty, humid air and with temperature swings. They go stiff, crack and bulge. Under mains pressure, a weak inlet hose can burst and flood the laundry, sometimes while nobody is home. This is one of the most damaging faults we see.

Prevention: Check hoses before each season and replace any that are cracked, stiff or bulging. Braided stainless steel inlet hoses last much longer. Close the tap when you leave the house.

Seized drain pumps

When a machine stands unused, any water left in the pump can leave a residue that dries and binds the impeller. The first time the machine runs, the pump hums but does not turn, and the machine will not drain.

Prevention: Run the machine occasionally when you visit, and clean the pump filter before leaving.

Sand in the pump

Beach and river sand from towels and swimwear collects in the pump filter and damages the pump.

Prevention: Shake out and rinse sandy items before washing, and clean the pump filter regularly during the holidays.

Mouldy and torn door seals

Front loaders left closed in a humid house grow mould in the door seal and drawer. Mould and age weaken the rubber until it splits and leaks.

Prevention: Leave the door and drawer open when you lock up, and run a hot cleaning wash when you arrive.

Corroded connections

Damp, salty air corrodes electrical connections, especially on machines in garages or outdoor laundry areas. Symptoms include tripping the power, not starting or stopping mid-cycle.
