Humansdorp's climate is different from the coast

Humansdorp is only a short drive from Jeffreys Bay, but it does not get the same cooling sea breeze. Summer afternoons in town can be noticeably hotter than at the beach, and on clear winter nights the temperature drops much further. That two-sided climate shapes how we approach aircon installations here.

At the coast, many people buy an aircon mainly for cooling. In Humansdorp, most of our customers want a unit that does both jobs well: cool the house down in January and keep a bedroom or lounge warm in July. A reverse-cycle inverter aircon does exactly that, and it usually heats a room for less electricity than a bar heater or oil heater.

Sizing for hot afternoons and cold nights

We size every unit for the most demanding conditions it will face in that room, not an average day. In Humansdorp that usually means hot summer afternoons. Things that push the size up:

• West-facing rooms that take the afternoon sun
• Rooms under corrugated iron or uninsulated roofs, common in older town houses and farm buildings
• Large windows or glass doors
• High ceilings in older homes
• Kitchens and offices with heat from appliances and computers

A typical bedroom might suit a 12,000 BTU unit here where a similar room in J-Bay would be fine with 9,000 BTU. Living areas often need 18,000 to 24,000 BTU. We confirm the size after seeing the room.

A properly sized unit also heats well. An undersized unit runs flat out in winter and still cannot keep the room warm, which is a common complaint we hear from people who bought the cheapest unit on special.

Homes in town and Kruisfontein

Most of our Humansdorp installations are in family homes in town and Kruisfontein: main bedrooms, children's rooms and open-plan living areas. Older homes often have thick walls and big roof spaces, while newer homes may have lower ceilings and better insulation. Both affect sizing and where the units can go.

Dust is more of an issue here than salt. Gravel roads, farmland and windy days mean filters and outdoor coils clog faster than at the coast. We position outdoor units away from driveways and gravel areas where possible, and we show you how to clean the indoor filters, which in Humansdorp may need doing every few weeks in summer.

Farm houses and outbuildings

Installing on a farm brings its own challenges. Walls may be stone or very thick brick, the electrical supply may be limited or far from the room, and the outdoor unit may need to be protected from livestock, farm dogs or machinery. We plan this during the site visit, including:

• Longer pipe runs where the outdoor unit cannot go directly behind the room
• Protective cages or raised mounting where animals or vehicles are around
• Checking that the electrical supply can carry the load, and advising when a registered electrician is needed for a new circuit
• Units that run efficiently on solar and battery backup systems, which many farms use

Farms outside town are booked by arrangement, and we try to combine trips to keep travel costs fair.

Offices, shops and the industrial area

Small offices, practices, shops and workshops in Humansdorp benefit hugely from good cooling in summer. Staff work better, stock keeps better and customers stay longer. For commercial spaces we look at:

• The number of people and computers in the room
• Shopfront glass, which brings in a lot of heat
• Whether two smaller units would spread cooling better than one large one, and give a backup if one fails
• A service schedule, because commercial units often run all day

Inverter units and backup power

Many homes and farms around Humansdorp have solar panels, inverters and batteries. Inverter aircons are the right choice for these systems because they start gently, without the large current surge of a fixed-speed compressor, and they draw less power once the room is at temperature.
