A good coffee machine is one of the pleasures of a Kenton-on-Sea holiday. But left on the counter for months with water, milk and old beans inside, it can greet you next season with leaks, blockages and error lights. Fifteen minutes before you leave prevents almost all of it.

Quick answer

Before leaving, clean and dry the milk system, empty the beans, rinse and dry the brew unit, empty and dry the tank, drip tray and grounds container, descale if due, leave covers open to dry and switch off at the wall. When you return, reassemble, fill with fresh water, run several rinses and check for leaks before making coffee.

What goes wrong during the off-season

When a coffee machine stands for weeks or months in a humid, salty coastal house:

  • Milk residue dries into hard plugs in frothers and tubes.
  • Coffee oils on the brew unit and in the bean hopper go rancid and sticky.
  • Old beans become stale and oily, and can clog the grinder.
  • Standing water in the tank and internal pipes goes stale and can grow biofilm.
  • Seals and O-rings dry out and shrink, causing leaks.
  • Scale that was building up hardens further.
  • Corrosion can affect switches and metal parts in very damp, salty air.

The 15-minute shutdown routine

1. Clean the milk system

Run the machine's milk cleaning programme, then remove and dismantle the frother, carafe or milk spout. Wash all parts in warm soapy water, rinse well and dry completely. Store the parts separately, not assembled, so air can reach every surface.

For steam wands, purge, wipe and soak the tip in hot water, then dry.

2. Empty the beans

Do not leave beans in the hopper for months. They go stale and their oils coat the hopper and grinder. Empty the hopper, wipe it out with a dry cloth and store any remaining beans in an airtight container, or take them home.

3. Clean the brew unit

If your machine has a removable brew unit, remove it, rinse it under lukewarm water and let it dry fully before refitting. Brush out any loose grounds from the brew unit area.

4. Empty everything

  • Empty, rinse and dry the water tank.
  • Empty, rinse and dry the drip tray and grounds container.

5. Descale if due

If the machine is close to needing a descale, do it now. Scale hardens over time, and starting the next season with a clean system helps.

6. Remove the water filter

If your machine uses a filter cartridge, remove it before leaving. A filter that dries out and then sits for months is usually best replaced with a new one when you return.

7. Leave it open to dry

Leave the tank lid, bean hopper lid and any doors slightly open so moisture can escape.

8. Switch off at the wall

This protects the electronics from power surges while the house is empty.

The restart routine

When you return to Kenton:

1. Reassemble the milk system, brew unit, tray and container. 2. Fit a new water filter if you use one. 3. Fill the tank with fresh water. 4. Switch on and let the machine run its start-up rinse. 5. Run two or three cups of hot water through the coffee spout and the steam or milk outlet. 6. Check under and around the machine for leaks. 7. Add fresh beans and make a test coffee. Discard the first one.

If something is not right

  • Leaks: dried-out seals are the usual cause. Check the drip tray and tank first, then call us.
  • No milk froth: the milk system may still be blocked internally. Run the cleaning programme again, then call us if it does not clear.
  • Weak or cold coffee: descale. If that does not help, the heater or valves may need attention.
  • Error lights: note the pattern or message, switch off at the wall for a few minutes and restart. If it persists, send us a photo.

Holiday rentals

If you let your Kenton home, consider whether a bean-to-cup machine is the right choice. A simple capsule machine is easier for guests, quicker to clean between bookings and cheaper to replace. If you do keep a premium machine, leave clear instructions and ask your cleaner to handle the daily and weekly cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

Should I leave water in my coffee machine while I am away?

No. Empty and dry the tank, and leave the lid open so the machine can dry out.

Do I need to replace the water filter after the off-season?

It is usually best. A filter that has dried out and sat for months may not work properly or hygienically.

My machine leaks every time I come back. Why?

Seals can shrink when the machine dries out for months. A service with new seals usually fixes it.
